This fundraising concert for Isha Vidhya, one of Isha Foundation’s large-scale humanitarian projects in Tamil Nadu, was organized by volunteers who were inspired to donate their talents and time to this worthy cause that addresses the challenges of India’s rural education system.

The mission of Isha Vidhya is to work for the economic and social empowerment of rural children, and thus of society; this is accomplished by building high quality schools and offering a nurturing approach to education. Isha Vidhya also actively promotes the education of female children and creates the possibility for rural children to pursue higher education or find gainful employment, thereby building a strong foundation for the country’s economic growth.

Seven notable local artists, including 4 Isha meditators, took the stage, and additional meditators supported by hosting, greeting guests, and managing the sound. Over a dozen sponsors supported this fundraiser, and numerous volunteers and friends helped coordinate and conduct the event to make it a terrific success. One of the volunteers shared that, “We had such a wonderful time during our whole process from the beginning to the end. Through this fund raiser we were not only able to raise money but also had the opportunity to taste real joy and satisfaction. It is my wish to have another fund raising event soon and to have many more people come to witness and take part in this joy.”

About 300 visitors and supporters enjoyed the performance, which included classical numbers, traditional festival songs, and hits from popular movies which received “encore” requests from the crowd! The show received overwhelming support from the audience, who expressed their enthusiasm with comments such as, “The song selection and mix made us reminisce about the good old melodies from the 80s and 90s”, “the engaging and dancing singers kept the energy up through the entire performance…” and “the broad range of genres made the show interesting and entertaining to a broad audience.”

The event was a grand success raising over $5000 to support the education of underprivileged children in villages of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This amount could support a full year of education for at least 10 children, including daily transportation and meals.

There are many opportunities and ways that one can support Isha Vidhya. Donors can sponsor a child’s education as a full scholarship, provide for a child’s transportation to school and noon-time meal, or help build and furnish new schools and purchase school buses. Donations represent a value well beyond face value, offering a gift that transforms many lives. For more information about Isha Vidhya click here.
