Yoga Helps Couple with Autistic Son

It's well known that yoga can improve a person's health. Faithful practitioners can lower their heart rates, become calmer, and reduce stress. But can yoga change another person's life? Madhavi and Radha Manan know that it can.

The Pearland couple say they not only see positive changes in themselves, but also say their autistic son benefits from their decision the Inner Engineering program.

Radha and Madhavi moved to Houston from India in 1995 so Radha could pursue a job in software consulting. Although the move was a drastic one for the family, dealing with a child who has autism was even more of a challenge.

When he was a toddler, his parents noticed Venkat's language development lagged slightly, but it was after they returned to collect their son after a year-long stay with his grandparents in India that the couple discovered that, at almost 4 years old, their child still was not speaking. A doctor's diagnosis confirmed Venkat had autism.

"That's when we started going down emotionally and mentally," Radha recalled. The next couple of years were tough.

Madhavi echoed the depression and despair her husband felt. "I used to compare him to other kids. As a mom, I went through a lot."

But things changed for the family, which includes 13-year-old-daughter Pavani, when Radha noticed a big change in his old college roommate and business partner. After learning his partner had attended the Inner Engineering program, Radha was so impressed, he flew to Detroit to participate in the program. Practice was required morning and night for 45 days. "Slowly — something was there, some energy level," said Radha. "I see more clarity with my son."

Radha said he felt joy to the point of laughter, and came to realize his son has always felt the same level of joy. "I see beyond the physical level,"  Radha said.

Said Madhavi, "It's helping a lot in all ways with our son, the positive energies we are doing.

Now the little boy who couldn't talk "really communicates," Madhavi said. "Something is behind it."
