Isha Kriya for Cancer Support Groups

An Isha volunteer in Detroit writes:

"We offered the Isha Kriya meditation to cancer support groups at the Karmanos Cancer Institute on two different occasions.  On February 16, Isha Kriya was offered to the young women’s cancer support group.  Seven women attended the session which was very well received. Comments from the women after completing the kriya  included, 'What a relief,'  'This was so relaxing,' and, 'It’s important to have something like this when dealing with an illness like cancer.'  Many expressed their gratitude for the experience and were excited to try the meditation at home on their own.  One participant was sure she wanted to go and share it with one of her friends who could not attend the session that night.  Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the Isha Kriya by the members of this group, we were asked back to offer it to the couple’s support group.

On March 6, Isha Kriya was offered to the couple’s cancer support group.  Sixteen people attended and again the response to the kriya was extremely positive.  There were many personal thank-you’s and exclamations of how relaxing it was and how much it was needed.  A few people said they couldn’t wait to start doing it at home every day.  Since these were couples many were excited about doing it together.  One participant exclaimed, 'This is better than Xanax or Ativan!'

The coordinator of these groups let us know that they have offered other meditation programs in the past but none were as well received as the Isha Kriya.  She was excited to see the participants have a positive experience and to be able to offer them a valuable tool to help deal with the circumstances they are facing.  After this last session we have been asked to offer it to the staff at the cancer center, which we hope to have scheduled soon."
