Isha Foundation's 'Project Green Hands' to increase Tamil Nadu's green cover by 10%

Chennai, Sunday, October 15, 2006: Isha Foundation, the Coimbatore based NGO associated with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations today inaugurated its Guinness Record breaking initiative Project Green Hands in Chennai. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Dr. M. Karunanidhi kick-started the initiative by planting the first sapling at his residence, in advance of the mass plantation drive of 7,00,000 saplings scheduled for 17th October 2006. Project Green Hands aims to increase Tamil Nadu’s green cover by 10% by planting an additional 114 million saplings in the next 10 years.

Isha Foundation will mobilize a massive 250,000 volunteers of the Foundation along with school children and villagers for this ambitious Project Green Hands. The Project will cover 27 districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore and Salem.

Talking about Project Green Hands, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder – Isha Foundation said, ‘The aim of Project Green Hands is to restore the delicate ecological balance of Tamil Nadu and increase the green cover to a desired level. That Project Green Hands is also a Guinness Record initiative is incidental – in the hope that through this – we will be able to raise awareness of the project and enthuse other organizations to undertake similar projects. “I would be the happiest when others would break this record”, said Sadhguru.

The planting of a record 700,000 saplings will take place all over Tamil Nadu.
