Yogic Way to Hockey Gold

19 May, 1996

Coimbatore May 18 - Will yogasanam help India to clinch hockey gold in the forthcoming Olympic Games at Atlanta? Yes, says Sathguru Jaggi Yasudev. He sounded so confident if not boasting when he said, "Give me the boys for a week and I will give you the gold."

The Coimbatore based Swamiji who is here on a 15-day meditation camp, was invited for discussions by the president of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), Mr. K.P.S. Gill and the secretary general of IHF, Mr. Jothikumaran. Sathguru. Jaggi spoke at length on what yoga can do on our sportsmen. "Yoga and meditation will help the players stay mentally focused, specially during pressure situations and will build their stamina physically.

"Rigorous training, chalking out of match strategies are not the only means for a team to come out in flying colours," the Swamiji added.

Pranayamam (a breathing exercise) and some specific asanas for muscle relaxation and brisk movement of the body will be part of the training programme.

"Meditation will be for 15 minutes each day and thereafter the players will be left on their own," said the Swamiji. "It will be of great help to our players both physically and mentally," said Mr. Jothikumaran. In fact I have experienced it in my own life. It stood both me and my family in good stead."

Both the president and the secretary general of IHF have agreed in principle with the suggestions of the Swamiji and are most likely to seek his services for the team. However, it all depends on the nod of the chief coach of the team Mr. Cedric D' Souza. If the whole thing comes through, the team will be in Coimbatore for a week prior to the tour to Atlanta.
