27 November, 2003

GRANDMOTHERS ALWAYS had umpteen home remedies for ailments. They would just grind a tulsi leaf or some other herb collected from the garden and lo! The medicine was ready in a jiffy.

However today, not many understand the value of herbal gardens. Those who do, shy away from it terming it a difficult task. But not the Isha Foundation. As part of its visionary project 'Action for Rural Rejuvenation', the Foundation raised herbal gardens in villages around Gobichettipalayam.

Their effort focuses on initiating rejuvenation programmes in remote villages and transforming the lives of villagers.

Under the guidance of renowned natural scientist, Nammalwar, the Foundation set up model herbal gardens at Kaliyur, Yelur, Kugalur, Vellapalayam, Moolavaikal and Akkaraikodiver.

The programme that began last month is aimed at addressing the basic needs of the rural populace of Tamil Nadu. "Restoring the pride and spirit of the rural folks is more important than creating material wealth on a par with the West. We should restore the unique culture of our land, which is an outpouring of wisdom of the countless sages and seers that graced it," said Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

Through these model herbal gardens, the aim is also to restore indigenous and local health traditions in these areas. "The once popular home remedies have become increasingly uncommon due to non-availability of herbs. Setting up more herbal gardens would help," he observed.

"The model garden will popularise these home remedies. It will also reduce the excessive expenditure on chemical drugs," said Jaggi. The Foundation also has volunteers to answer queries on herb cultivation.
