Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple Lights Up Blue on World Diabetes Day to prevent Children from Dying from Diabetes!

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has launched a global campaign to light iconic monuments and sites in blue to mark World Diabetes Day – 14 November 2008 to bring about awareness about Diabetes to the public.
World Diabetes Day (www.worlddiabetesday.org) now a UN day marks a call to action to raise awareness around the world about diabetes. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2008 is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents.
Isha Foundation has partnered with IDF to help bring Diabetes to Light by lighting up the Dhyanalinga multireligious temple (www.dhyanalinga.org) blue on November 14th, 2008
On November 15th 2008, in association with India Diabetes Research Foundation (IDRF) a one day Training programme to conduct Diabetic Screening Camp will be conducted for medical and paramedical professionals in Coimbatore and on November 16th 2008, a free diabetic screening camp will be held in Isha Rural Health Clinic, Alandurai, Coimbatore for the public by Isha Foundation.

Every fourth diabetic in the world today is an Indian.
Indians are genetically more susceptible to diabetes
If unchecked, 25 lakhs people will develop Diabetes every year and the rate would be increasing in subsequent years
Juvenile Diabetes
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases to affect children. Globally, over 200 children a day develop type 1 diabetes. It can strike children of any age, even toddlers and babies. If not detected early enough in a child, the disease can be fatal or result in serious brain damage. Yet diabetes in a child is often completely overlooked.It is often misdiagnosed as the flu or it is not diagnosed at all.
In India,
Currently, there are 10 lakh children with Diabetes.
Among those 70 percent come from poor families.
Not less than half of them have to earn living and help parents, instead of going to the school. Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes, Insulin is alien and luxurious to them
Over 12 thousand children every year (33 children per day) die of Diabetes. There is no count of how many die undiagnosed.
Isha in Fighting against Diabetes
Has conducted Health Camps for screening Diabetes and creating awareness in rural TN-over 1500 camps have been conducted so far
Has been treating Diabetic patients free of cost in 1090 villages in TN on a regular basis for the last 5 years
Runs Yoga Marga residential camps for Diabetic patients using alternate systems of treatment. Over 5000 people have been benefited so far.
Holds awareness camps in villages and schools all over Tamilnadu through its project 'Arokiya Alai'. Launched in Dec 2007, this project aims to bring awareness of diabetes symptoms and other chronic ailments to rural people through specially designed short films, posters and stickers to 5000 villages by the end of 2009.
Through its Isha yoga programs people are encouraged to eat healthy foods to prevent chronic ailments like Diabetes
